Yesterday we woke up ready to do our lanterns for Martinmas. We will be meeting with other families to do a walk in the woods of Buskett and hold a Martinmas walk while singing nature verses. Despite calling it a Martinmas walk, it is more a celebration of the light, of the dwindling warmth, of changing seasons.
Than on 11 November we will learn more about St Martin and receive St Martin’s bag – a Maltese tradition were children get a bag with nuts, fruit and nowadays a few sweets as well.
The lanterns were very easy to make: an old jar, paint with white glue and put coloured tissue paper of your choice + add some decorations. Than with some wire and pipe cleaners we did a handle. However as the candle gets hot we added the stick for the children to hold from. This will be removed at home and we’ll decorate with them 🙂
