Anticipating Advent

The first light of Advent is the light of stone–.                                               Stones that live in crystals, seashells, and bones.
The second light of Advent is the light of plants–
Plants that reach up to the sun and in the breezes dance.
The third light of Advent is the light of beasts–
All await the birth, from the greatest and in least.
The fourth light of Advent is the light of humankind–
The light of hope that we may learn to love and understand.  –  attributed to R. Steiner or to an anonymous author

I love Advent …..the waiting and anticipation.  It is a season that reminds me how thankful I should be, how blessed I am.  It is a season were I focus more inwards and think of what was, what is and what’s to come.  The process of inner work always helps me to focus more for the upcoming year.

Advent in our house is celebrated by decorating, baking and random acts of kindness in general.  Every day we take out a card from our calendar, read the scripture and the activity to follow with it.   Some activities are just for fun, most will give more meaning to Christmas.

What we’ll be doing in the first week of Advent:

On 28th we’ll do our Advent wreath.  This year we  will incorporate the above quote to our wreath.

29 Nov, we will light up the first candle and put up the decorations for Christmas.

During the rest of the week, we will prepare for St Nicholas on Dec 6, as well as do some fun games as a family.

Second week is started with the feast of St Nicholas.  We will read that story and give some presents to the local creche.  This week we start focusing more on random and not so random acts of kindness.  We also prepare for St Lucia day on Dec 13.

Third week starts with St Lucia day, we will read her story, do some Lucia Buns.  We will continue focusing on acts of kindness by doing a kindness tree.

Fourth and last week of Advent. It is also the start of the Winter season, so hopefully we will do a Winter spiral with friends.  If not I’d like to do something similar for us.  This week we will write a letter to Jesus to thank Him for this year and another letter which is a family letter.  This will have our intentions and goals for the coming year and we will put it in our living room to daily remind us of our hopes and dreams.

We will also continue to celebrate the 12 days of Christmas after that.

Here is a link to the Parenting Passageway which has always been an inspiration to how I celebrate Advent with the family.

  1. Love the post. Full of great ideas. Love the quote at the beginning. We are going to do the giving in the form of Neighbor Gifts. We are going to make up gift boxes and then wait until they aren’t home to quick drop them off. Then we will wait and watch from the window. The gifts will not be labeled so they will have no idea who they are from. I am hoping it will become tradition and teach the spirit of giving over getting.
